Next Stop: Koyuk

Just found out that I will be heading up to Koyuk, AK for two weeks at the end of May for a summer school session. Arts integration extravaganza! Koyuk is a small village of a whopping 332 people. It is part of the Bering Straight School District and it is pretty damn close to the arctic circle... not quite there, but close. During their spare time, Koyuk residents ride their snow-goes (on snow, dirt AND water) and a small amount of commercial fishing. From what I read, Koyuk is extremely dependent on subsistence living and unemployment is high. There are 102 students in the school (elementary and middle/high). Accessed only by air and sea-- 90 air miles from Nome.... which means, I believe, I get to visit Nome as well. More to come...
